Yoga has been a huge part of my life since I started practicing in 2008. My practice has moved from physical practice into a more intentional, deep, and spiritual moving meditation. Throughout the years, my mat has been the place where I can drop everything, let go and breathe through the struggles and challenges I face in my life, personally and professionally. Since yoga has been such a huge part of my growth and healing, as a blogger, model, writer, and content creator, I have been trying to find a way to blend yoga and fashion. In finding a way to do this, I would have the opportunity to bring my followers and readers into this essential part of my life.
This year, I was invited as a guest to the National Portrait Gallery’s Spring Soiree featuring Christy Turlington and Tonne Goodman of Vogue. Halfway through the discussion up popped the Vogue 2002 cover and spread of Christy Turlington dripping in jewels in a silk Calvin Klein dress. There, I found the inspiration I was looking for. I knew I had to re-create a portion of it. Read more about the full experience here.
I partnered with Photographer Drew Xeron, Stylist, Owner and Founder of Kingsley Management, Joy Kingsley-Ibeh and Owner and founder of “NOIR” and “Isoke Salaam PR,” Isoke Salaam to bring forward a beautiful yoga and fashion story inspired by Vogue’s 2002 spread modeled by Christy Turlington and styled by Tonne Goodman.
As we moved through the shoot, emotions were being brought up. At the time, these photos were being taken at a huge shift in my life personally, so the energy we captured was raw and uncensored. The shoot shifted from being a re-creation of the Vogue spread to much more…
We intended to take the viewer down a visual journey of yoga through photography, using color, poses, and backdrop. We used light, mist, concrete walls, structures, and wood to capture the mood we were going for. The photos came out effortless, raw, and beautiful. They show a woman, through pain and struggle, find freedom and light.
What story do these photos tell you?
In the dark,
Brighter than many ever see.
Through the soul’s own mastery.
And now the world receives
From her dower:
The message of the strength
Of inner power.
